In response to recent media coverage, the NHS has launched a new online resource to support patients and the public. This initiative aims to address concerns about personal health and provide comprehensive information and assistance. Access the new resource at NHS Infected Blood Support.
Blood Safety and Testing:
Since 1991, the UK has implemented rigorous screening and safety standards for all donated blood, managed by NHS Blood and Transplant. This ensures that both donors and recipients are protected through thorough testing procedures. As a result, the risk of infection from blood transfusions or blood products has become very low.
If you are concerned about a possible past infection:
- Hepatitis C: We understand that recent news might raise concerns, particularly regarding asymptomatic hepatitis C. If you’d like to be tested, you can book a free and confidential blood test appointment at our surgery. Alternatively, you can book a free home test at: Home – HepC (hepctest.nhs.uk)
- Hepatitis B and HIV: For information on Hepatitis B and HIV testing, please visit the following resources:
- Hepatitis B information: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hepatitis-b/
- NHS HIV testing services: https://www.nhs.uk/service-search/other-health-services/hiv-testing
We also offer confidential sexual health testing at the surgery this includes testing for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis. If you would like to discuss sexual health testing in addition to the options above, please don’t hesitate to contact our surgery to book an appointment.

While the risk of infection from past blood transfusions is very low, we understand this can be a worrying time. To find help and support, there is a dedicated website that can be accessed here: https://nhs.uk/infected-blood-support
