As pupils and students begin a new school year, we would like to remind parents, carers, schools and colleges of our position regarding requests for medical evidence to support unrestricted toilet access.
Being able to use the toilet when needed is a basic human need and should not depend on medical certification. School Lane Surgery does not provide letters confirming normal bodily functions or needs, including urinary urgency, bowel movements or menstruation. Producing letters for this purpose is not an appropriate use of NHS resources.
We also do not issue “sick notes”, also known as MED3 fit notes, for schools or colleges. MED3 fit notes are specifically designed to provide information about a person’s fitness for work. They are not a general-purpose form of medical evidence for educational establishments.
Schools and colleges should work directly with students and their parents or carers to understand their individual circumstances and agree the most appropriate support or arrangements. Requiring a medical note, certificate or fit note can create unnecessary barriers and may affect a young person’s dignity and wellbeing.
