Keep Warm at Home
A warm home is important for both physical and mental wellbeing. Cold homes can make existing health conditions worse and increase the risk of illness, particularly for older people, young children, pregnant women and those living with long-term conditions.
Some simple ways to keep warm include:
- Heating the rooms you use most regularly to a comfortable temperature, with guidance suggesting at least 18°C where possible.
- Closing curtains as it gets dark to help keep heat indoors.
- Reducing draughts around doors and windows.
- Wearing several thinner layers of clothing rather than one thick layer.
- Using warm blankets, thick socks and comfortable nightwear during colder nights.
If you use gas appliances, ensure they are serviced regularly and consider fitting a carbon monoxide alarm if you do not already have one. [
Look After Your Health
Winter is a time when seasonal illnesses such as flu and other respiratory infections become more common. Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and those around you.
We encourage eligible patients to take up offers of:
- Seasonal flu vaccination
- Covid vaccination
- Other recommended vaccinations including pneumococcal and shingles vaccines where appropriate
You can also help protect yourself by:
- Washing your hands regularly
- Catching coughs and sneezes in tissues
- Avoiding close contact with people who are unwell
- Keeping indoor spaces ventilated where practical
If you are feeling unwell, your local community pharmacy can often provide expert advice and treatment for many common winter ailments without needing a GP appointment.
Stay Active
Physical activity helps maintain strength, mobility and independence, and can also help you stay warmer during colder weather. Even gentle movement around the home can make a difference.
Try to:
- Avoid sitting still for long periods
- Take regular walks when conditions are safe
- Do simple stretches or chair-based exercises if mobility is limited
- Maintain activities and hobbies that keep you moving
Eat Well and Stay Hydrated
A healthy diet helps you immune system and maintain energy levels over winter.
Consider:
- Having at least one hot meal each day
- Drinking plenty of fluids, including hot drinks
- Keeping cupboards stocked with essential foods in case poor weather makes travelling difficult
- Eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables
Be Prepared for Cold Weather
Winter weather can change quickly. Planning ahead can help reduce stress and keep you safe.
Think about:
- Ordering regular medications before you run out
- Keeping a small supply of basic other the counter medication or remedies at home. Such as for a sore throat or paracetamol.
- Checking weather forecasts during cold spells
- Ensuring you have enough food and essential supplies if travel becomes difficult
- Wearing footwear with good grip when conditions are icy or wet
Check on Family, Friends and Neighbours
One of the most important things we can do during winter is stay connected.
A quick phone call, message or visit can make a huge difference, particularly for older relatives, neighbours who live alone, or anyone who may be struggling with their health or wellbeing.
Consider checking whether they:
- Have enough food and medication
- Are managing to keep warm
- Need help with shopping or essential tasks
- Simply want someone to talk to
