School Toilet Pass Requests and Medical Evidence

We have been asked about whether the surgery can provide medical evidence to support requests for unrestricted toilet passes in school(s). We want to make it clear that this is not something NHS services can provide.

Access to the toilet when needed is a basic human need and does not require medical certification. It is not an appropriate use of NHS resources to provide letters confirming normal bodily functions such as urinary urgency, bowel movements or menstrual needs.

We encourage schools to manage toilet access through discussion with the student and their family. Asking for medical notes or certificates for this purpose may create unnecessary barriers and impact the wellbeing and dignity of students and is not required.
